国越孝子 (1911-2000) Takako Kunigoshi was an early practitioner of Aikido and a student of the Founder back before it was even called Aikido. In the 1930s, her knack for sketching techniques, which started as a way to remember them, became an important piece of the history of Aikido when the Founder, seeing her talent, worked with her to develop them for a technical manual that would be published in 1934 under the name Budo Renshu.

Aikido can be viewed and practiced as a self-defense art, a conflict resolution art, a (moving) meditation, a method for stress reduction, a way to achieve a healthy and peaceful lifestyle or a path to spiritual growth.
